Tail rubbing

how do you stop it? Horse has been wormed so I know it's not that but he's rubbing hair off & it's really getting bad. Is there anything I can add to his feed to help with this? Thanks for any/all suggestions

Might he be getting bitten by tiny little gnats? I've seen some horses this time of year and thru the summer, who literally rub out their manes and tails from the itching. Almost seems like an allergic reaction. Try treating his tail really well with fly repellant.

I was thinking garlic powder or something in his feed? I've been using baby oil but it doesn't seem to be working Sad

Try a mix of 50/50 water and listerine

You have to be careful with garlic. There may be potential for toxicity. Not all animals get along with it as well as humans. I know there are some garlic products made specifically for horses, and those are probably safe, but I wouldn't take the garlic powder shaker from the kitchen and use that. One of my boarders who had a horse that did this, used Gold Bond powder. It helped a little. You might try that.

I like listerine as well...its antiseptic value seems to bring relief to an itchy tail. Sometimes, when bathing, if you are not careful to spray thoroughly at the top and sides of the tailbone it will leave some dirt behind and cause the horse to itch...just a thought if all other ideas have been exhausted. Smile

I have a mare who has been rubbing her tail for years, and I think I have tried everything! so if anything works for you, please let me know Smile

I started rubbing baby oil onto the base of his tail & the top & voila! no more tail rubbing & the hair is growing in nicely. Try that, Simone, it worked wonders for my boy Smile
