I am going to show HA Stock/Hunter ATH at Region 15, the question is what to wear. I don't see specifications in the rules, but there seems to be an awful lot of women showing in black suits. Is it acceptable to wear a blouse with conservative dress pants? How about a short-sleeved or sleeveless blouse? I am thinking of the heat and the abililty to move my arms, but also want to convey respect to the judges and for the show. Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

I have a Hunter Pleasure mare that is currently barefoot. She has nice feet and I was wondering if it will count against her if I show her this way...?

Judge, what are you looking for during a HALTER class entrance and what types of details will get me the second and third look we all desire (besides quality)? Is the handler's attire important? Horse's grooming? Is name recognition as important as people think? etc.......

On another board there is once again photos of extreme shoeing with pad stacks. It invariably comes around to people saying "I don't like doing it, but I have to if I want to be competitive". So, my question is, can one compete in the SS division, especially CEP, with a flat shod horse? Many people state that the pads don't change motion, but I have gotten so I can pick out the padded horses almost immediately. Can a well trained, well mannered horse that meets all the specs of ...

We have just purchased an ex-show horse for my granddaughter. She is a retired 17 year old Half-Arabian CEP mare. My granddaughter is almost 7, has been taking lessons since 4, and doing very nicely. Still, when she shows this year, we plan on her riding with a helmet, not a soft derby. I understand that one of the helmet companies makes a derby version, which looks like a pretty big derby, but still attempts to fit the look. A local Arabian judge told me he would not be able to look past ...

New Hunter Rules

I have heard about new hunter rules that took effect in March or April. I was told that excessive knee action would be penalized and there was mention of wearing more traditional, subdued clothing in the show ring. Where can I find a written copy of this rule? I looked on the AHA site, but don't see reference of this. How is it that some people (trainers) are aware of these changes, but others are not?

Show Hack question

Ok, so my question is:

Show hack is by far my favourite discipline, and I've been doing it for a while with one of my trainer's horses. This year, my horse is ready to enter the show ring doing show hack, but I really don't want to put a full bridle on him, as he has the softest, most flexible mouth I have ever felt. He really doesn't need the full bridle to have a great headset, and I'm afraid the Weymouth bit would just make him heavier and 'harder.

But, when I've shown in the past I've ...

I love this idea! Thanks in advance for any info you can share!

My daughter shows in HA hunter classes, 13 and under. How does judging in these classes differ from the purebred classes, if at all? For example, is a higher headset more acceptable in these classes or do the standards remain the same?

Is there anything that really stands out for you in the junior classes that you particularly like? Dislike?

Thanks so much!

We have been blessed with the addition of Judge's Lori Conway and Lisa Blackstone. Both are eager to answer your questions as they relate to what the judge is looking for and thinking about during a class. Now, there is a difference between asking the judge a question and questioning a judge so let's keep the theme in the "learning" mode and ask them questions. You put in all the hard work preparing for a class, you have hauled in and you are ready to go......One more thing to know....WHAT ...
