| Well, it's been a rough day.
Finally, about 20 minutes ago (about 10:10 p.m.), mamma let the foal nurse.
We had to have the vet out because of the placenta and it's still attached firmly to the uterus. She's had two more shots of Oxytocin and it's only come out another inch or two more. Hopefully it comes out soon. Vet was able to pull a bit out and tie a huge knot in it to keep it from going back inside.
While the vet was here we were able to get the mare milked and the foal fed about 14 oz. Luckily he's a really strong, determined foal and has mostly cooperated.
Mare gets all sorts of shots tonight and antibiotics for days. The vet will be back out early tomorrow to see if the placenta passed or not and if not we'll go from there. He'll also pull and IgG on the foal. She's such a good mamma but she has to keep her nose on him at all times, which makes him nursing difficult, she'll whirl around until he's in front of her and put her nose back on him... She's much better now than she was a few hours ago.
Please keep your fingers crossed that this all comes out good for the mare and her little guy. | |

| Wow, he's beautiful! Thank goodness he's strong. Mama sounds like she's have some first time mama issues that I've seen some mares go through, even though they may not be first timers.
My Egyptian mare refused to let her Fire An Ice colt nurse, too, and the placenta of course, would not slough until he did. She refused to let him out of her sight and spent the first couple of hours whirling around to find him. They were both so tired that they laid back down and when he got up first, he just dived in for breakfast while she was down! Course then the placenta finished coming out. The vet had told me that I was to haul them in when the sun came up and I was soooo looking forward to THAT!LOL She wouldn't let him nurse because it caused more contractions. Lots of drama. Course, as he got a few weeks older, he delighted in causing mama stress by taking off or refusing to follow her when we lead her from the stall to the pasture!LOL Seems to be a colt type behavior! Now 11 years later, he's a gorgeous boy and she is still our sweetheart worried about any of her stable buddies getting out of her sight!

| Yep sounds just like what she was doing. She's not doing it quite so much now. The placenta finally came out at about 3 this morning. But she got a couple of good chomps in before I made it from the house to the pen where she's at (I was watching her on cam, letting her have some space). Now I don't know if any of it was left in there or not. She is finally letting the foal nurse too. And she's finally letting him lay down to sleep. I'm not sure why she's so worried, she is getting better about it and hopefully she mellows a bit more soon. She still has to have her nose on him, but she's not quite so panicky about him today. He's a nice strong little guy too. Fiesty already lol. Friendly and curious though too, he follows us everywhere when we're in there. I think I just might have to keep this colt for my colored program, he just that nicely put together... | |

| Well I haven't decided yet. His name has to have the breeders initials in front (KS) because I didn't breed the mare, I bought her bred, but the rest of the name is up to me. I had a couple of ideas, but they were taken already, so I'm still thinking about it. | |

| Thanks everyone! Baby and Mamma are doing just great. Baby has turned into a landshark already, he's nibbling on everything lol. I spend more time thumping his nose than anything else. We've taken to calling him Sharky, so I guess that's his barn name lol. The mare is still being really protective of him, I was hoping she'd calm down some, she had but not as much as I'd like. I'll try to get more pics soon. I've just been so busy and of course the rain has returned. Forgot to add that the other roughly 7% is Quarter Horse. | |
