An Introduction

So for those of you a little lost on what this section of the Ammy Army forum is all about, I will do my best to explain. This section has been made avaliable so that we can discuss the "hot" topics effecting amateur exhibitors. This doesn't mean the gossip or he-said-she-said nonsense, but the issues currently affecting how we as amateurs (and youth!) enjoy out horses within the Arabian horse industry. The point of the Army is to have a group of amateurs supporting each other, this section should be no different. This is an execellent opportunity to learn from each other by comparing opinions on important matters.

Additionally I will also be posting a little bit about myself, and my "career"/abilities outside of the horse industry here very shortly. The reason for this being, that Del and I have talked over some very cool ideas on how these abilities can be put to use here at the Ammy Army!

Hi

I just fund the group by chance via facebook and Dimitri invited me to join. We are breeders of Crabbet related stock in Australia who are venturing back into the show ring here after a number of years away. The idea of a group of like minded people who want to show their horses and get back up from trainers is great.

I am sure that it is no different here where we have the professional trainers and large commercial studs and the other extreme of people who have their Arabians as part of their lifestyle and want to show our Arabians. A lot of ideas from America have come across to us some okay and some not okay. Our Society the Arabian Horse Society of Australia (AHSA) have done some rule changes in the last couple of years to try to stop cruelty in and out of the ring (from training techniques to showing techniques that many find unacceptable) to our beloved horses that many people felt uncomfortable to send horses to trainers. Plus many of us dropped out of showing as there was not equitable way to show against the professionals and very little assistance from the Affiliates (groups here in Australia mainly State based who run the groups who run shows etc) in many cases heavily influenced by certain sectors. There had not been info days, training days for years to get people interested in showing their horses. In the last 12 mths the interest seems to have dropped even more. We showed our colt last year at the NSW (New South Wales) National Stud show in 2 yrs olds 14 entries, this year in the same class there was 4. In his class their was 4 for 3 yr olds. This is dismal.

We know our boy is not the showring halter horses that the industry has made Arabians be perceived as in the last couple of decades. He is a saddle horse 15'3 plus at 3 (all natural no enhancements to make him grow other than good food and care). We are trying to show that this style of horse is still around for people and getting him out to shows has drawn attention. Perhaps get more people out with horses like him as well.

So basically your groups idea is great. Changing the perception of the Arabian shows and how they are run is also great. Many small steps by a number can work.

I am sure there are lots of things about the show scene that we have not liked for a long time and can discuss. Gain ideas from each other because we have a mutual reason, our Arabian horses

Wow - your description of the showring situation there reflects many of the same problems we are experiencing here - it is a small world after all!

Some wonderful horses have been imported/exported between the US and Australia.....
